Albert Gleizes was a French artist, theorist, philosopher, and an important influential figure for the Paris School. Albert Gleizes and Jean Metzinger wrote the first major treatise on Cubism, “Cubisme” in 1912. Gleizes was a founding member of the Golden Section group of artists. He was also a member of Der Sturm, and his numerous theoretical writings were among the most appreciated in Germany, where especially at the Bauhaus his ideas were taken into consideration. Gleizes spent four crucial years in New York and played an important role in raising America’s awareness of modern art. He was a member of the Société des Artistes Indépendants, founder of the Association Ernest-Renan, founder and participant of the Abbaye de Créteil. He was also founder, organiser and director of Abstraction-Création.
